Researchers from Nnamdi Azikiwe University have discovered the energy potential in the trash produced in each local government of Anambra State, claiming that, if effectively tapped, it can address the problem of electricity in the state.

The researchers explained in a study that was published in the Journal of Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery (10.1007/s13399-021-01783-5) that the Aguata local government alone produces about 198 tons of municipal solid waste every day, of which the organic component is thought to contain 545 megawatts of recoverable electricity.

All the LGAs can accommodate a large plant of roughly 50 m3, with a maximum of four plants allowed in the LGAs of Idemili and Aguata. Prof. Emmanuel Chukwuma and colleagues from the Department of Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering published this finding.
